SEAD Artists February Newsletter

Mohammed Hasan

Welcome to our first newsletter of the year!

We’ve kicked off 2025 with a strong start, making significant progress on key projects. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

Project Updates

V2.5 Sensor Build Completed

Sensor Installed at Chat Moss – Now Fully Operational!

This marks a big milestone in our work, understanding the urban airspace allows for further drone peatland progress!

SEAD at Fenland Soil Event

SEAD Artists presented at the Fenland Soil conference, delivering a presentation and engaging in key discussions about peatland restoration, water management, and paludiculture.

Fenland Soil - Key Takeaways

The event covered crucial topics, including:

  • Lowland Peat Management: Peatland drainage costs the UK tens to hundreds of millions per year.

  • CO2 Emissions: Lower water tables contribute significantly to emissions (7-13t/ha vs. 20-25t/ha).

  • Remote Sensing & Data Challenges: Current satellite methods struggle to differentiate between mineral and peat soils.

  • Regulation & Funding: Discussions on water management infrastructure, permitting processes, and eligibility for funding (>100ha land required).

  • Finance & Carbon Markets: Lloyds Bank shared insights on farming debt, carbon markets, and emerging monetisation opportunities. However, the need for investor engagement beyond government funding remains a challenge.

  • Paludiculture ROI: Insights into commercial viability for crops like blueberries, sphagnum, and cattail, though challenges exist in land use efficiency.

Looking Ahead

We continue refining our approaches, and working on connecting agriculture, aviation, and carbon markets.

Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, thank you for being part of the SEAD journey!
